Federal Republic of Nigeria is planning to assist the Federal Republic of Niger with bulk water from Jibiya dam in Katsina State to facilitate irrigation project in Republic of Niger.

Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Reng Ochekpe, announced this in a meeting with a delegation from the Federal Republic of Niger led by the Minister of Agriculture, Niger Republic, Mr. Abdul Labo.

The meeting was aimed at deepening cooperation on water resource management between the two countries, and also, to finalise the modalities and necessary agreement that would facilitate equitable utilisation of water as there was notable high interdependency between both countries for industrial purposes, irrigation agriculture, energy and other uses.

She added that the meeting would also create a platform for experts from both countries to share information and data and come up with better ways of implementing and monitoring the protocols and agreement to ensure mutual benefits.

Ochekpe further explained that Nigeria would consider the release of water to Niger for irrigation purposes as requested by the government of Niger, but also on their part, Niger should construct big reservoir that would contain the volume of water released from Nigeria to avoid waste.
