Juan G. R. Drought and climate change in California, its consequences.
Water and Irrigation. Vol .: 6, No. 1: 11-12, April, 2015, Spain.
The extreme and exceptional drought threatens 67% of California. California’s problem is not an isolated case, is part of reality, there are many regions in the world who are suffering from uncontrolled impact of human activity, the emission of greenhouse gases, global warming, climate change and the interaction of these factors. We have to make an individual action in each affected region and a collective global action, including all countries to try to reduce the causes of global effect caused. California and other states in the West, South and The High Plains have to take short-term measures to increase reforestation of areas affected in different states, as well as reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, to sustainable it development.
Is increasing dramatically categories of exceptional and extreme drought in the States of California and Nevada, the categories of extreme drought and severe drought to other neighboring states of Western United States, as Oregon, Utah, Arizona and Colorado gradually spreading. The exceptional drought occupies 42% of the area of California and 19% of the area of Nevada and continues to increase, affecting a population of about 40 million. The sum of the areas of extreme and exceptional drought threatens 67% of the State of California, which already has four years of drought. Currently also being gradually increasing categories of exceptional and extreme drought in the states of Oklahoma and Texas in the Southern United States and begins to manifest in the State of Kansas in the High Plains.
Note that there are other regions in the world today to thousands of miles of California, which are also affected by the exceptional drought and extreme as in the interior of Australia, New Zealand, the Horn of Africa such as Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia and in Namibia in Southern Africa. Extreme drought affects other states of southeastern Brazil hundreds of miles of the Amazon River, where in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest metropolis and financial center, the water situation is critical. Also by extreme drought there are different areas of Argentina, Central America and the Caribbean as well as regions of the Arabian Peninsula are damaged.
All these regions affected by the severe drought in different continents, have in common the great deforestation carried out by poorly controlled Human activity and threatens to destabilize the sustainable development of mankind impact, the global average level of forest area per capita is only 0.6 ha according FAO dates. and continues to reduce by deforestation and growth of the world population. In most developed countries like USA, China, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia and India the greatest environmental damage is caused by the high carbon which in 2014 reached a global level of 40,000 million tons / year.
Deforestation in the US was performed to increase agriculture and livestock, and timber exploitation, industrial development and trade, but the rate of deforestation has been higher than that of reforestation. Most of the deforestation of the United States occurred from 1620-1920 and cup current reforestation is not sufficient to restore forestry imbalance created over time. The United States has made great efforts for reforestation of the country, but there is still much to do to achieve the desired objectives, as it is with China, the two countries in the world that produce more carbon emissions. In the case of California in the last 50 years has gone one much of the forests that covered the state and today cup reforestation is still low, contributing, in conjunction with the high rate of carbon to favor, global warming and climate change.
California’s problem is not an isolated case, is part of reality, there are many regions in the world who are suffering from poorly controlled impact of human activity, the emission of greenhouse gases, global warming, climate change and the interaction of these factors, causing increased global temperatures, prolonged drought events and intense floods, melting poles and glaciers, rising water level of the seas and oceans, substantial economic losses and lives, so it is necessary to gain a collective consciousness that we are on an unsustainable path that leads to destruction.
We have to make an individual action in each affected region and a collective global action, including all countries to try to reduce the causes of global effect caused. We must also reduce water pollution in oceans and continents, controlling fertility levels in different countries and make our world planet earth is a sustainable place for humanity, flora and fauna.
California and other states in the West, South and The High Plains of the United States have to take short-term measures to increase reforestation of areas affected in different states, as well as reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, to make more sustainable development, global campaigns should promote what is being done to achieve scouring global warming and climate change.
