Cotton evapotranspiration in the conditions of Bulgaria.

Cotton evapotranspiration in the conditions of Bulgaria.

Hidrotecnia and Melioration Institute, Sofia, Bulgaria, 1998.

Total evapotranspiration of the cotton plant is about 350-400 mm for the crop cycle. Cotton plants in the conditions of Bulgaria grow well when the level of soil moisture ranges from 65 to 70% of field capacity during the development period until the beginning of flowering. During the period of flowering and fruit formation cultivation it requires more water readily available soil moisture and should be up 70 to 80% of field capacity. Cotton plants have a strong root system which allows the cultivation taking water from the deeper soil layers.

The average daily evapotranspiration of cotton per period is:
From planting to early stage of development …………1.2 mm / day.
From the development stage to the button stage……… 3.3 mm / day.
From button stage to flowering …………………… 5.7 mm / day.
From flowering to fruit formation ………………… 2.0 mm / day.
Phase more water demand corresponds to the development stage of the crop until flowering.
