National Department of Irrigation and Drainage. Ministry of Agriculture. Havana, Cuba, 1974.
Studied the root system of 4 trees in sweet orange Valencia variety on a Ferrallitic red soil at the Citrus Experiment Station from Güira Melena of the Havana province. The plantation was 16 years of age and the pattern used was the sour orange. For the investigation of the root system was used a monolith of 1 meters wide by 1.20 m. deep, with a length of 7 meters which corresponds to the distance of planting.
In turn this monolith divided into sections of 50 cm. long, each was numbered in distance and depth, in order to specify the distribution and behaviour of the roots for each section, each 10 cm.deep.Sampling, washing the roots, drying and preservation, classification of the roots in diameters of less than 1 mm, 1 to 3 mm and larger than 3 mm, the drying of the roots by diameter in to 105 degrees centigrade for 20 hours, was performed taking into consideration the technical specifications for this type of study.
According to the characteristics of the plantation, the agrotecnia used, the soil conditions and climate of the region, it is recommended that trees older than 12 years, is used to perform the irrigation to wet a depth of 65 cm. In this layer of soil are more than 75% of the active roots of citrus.
