Agriculture Ministers Agree to promote sustainable water use.

American Agriculture Ministers agreed to promote the sustainable use of water for agriculture and rural areas. The delegations agreed on the need to work together to boost agriculture projects in the hemisphere. They also agreed to encourage the development of national and regional programs that increase , innovation and technology transfer . Moreover it will promote long-term agricultural policies based on sound technical and scientific principles that take into account the development and sustainable use of water resources and new challenges due to climate change .
The meeting of American Agriculture Ministers concluded in Buenos Aires on September 26 with the commitment of the 34 participating countries to promote sustainable use of water for agriculture and rural areas. In a lengthy statement issued at the end of the regional meeting that began Tuesday in Buenos Aires , delegations agreed on the need to work together to boost agriculture projects in the hemisphere. They also agreed to encourage the development of national and regional programs to increase national capacity , innovation and technology transfer . The ministers convened include this topic in the next Summit of the Americas to be held in Panama in 2015 .
Among the 47 points outlined in the Declaration , the countries agreed to define national policies to ensure access and supply of water in quantity and quality necessary to face the challenges of agriculture. On the other hand , promote long-term agricultural policies based on sound scientific and technical principles that take into consideration the use and sustainable use of water resources and new challenges due to climate change . Another point relates to the definition of policies to the development, marketing and use of products from innovation , including biotechnology , which can reduce water consumption in agriculture.
The ministers agreed to conduce capacity building programs to improve the management and use of water in agriculture , without affecting its competitiveness , aim to entrepreneurs , producers, farmers, women , youth and their organizations . In promoting the transfer of technologies to capture and productive and efficient use of water resources , governments prioritize the identification of appropriate and affordable technologies for the different types of producers .
On climate change , the Ministers of Agriculture indicated that adaptation to this process will be conducted on scientific principles and the legal system of each country and the culture and traditions of nations. The document included a commitment to start or strengthen planning processes of agriculture , diversification projects , conversion , direct seeding , irrigation systems and relocation of production . Also encourage investment in water infrastructure , especially irrigation and drainage , in meteorology and the incorporation of space technologies and the communication in the efficient water management .
