In a red ferrallitic soils of the Sugarcane Experimental Station of Jovellanos in Cuba, it was studied the consumptive use of sugar cane, using a compensation lysimeter type Mariotte, experimental plots in which are irrigated with 90% of maximum evapotranspiration and no irrigated areas. The results obtained from sugarcane planted in September and harvested at December with 15.8 months of age, show a total evapotranspiration (Et) of 2 258 mm in the lysimeter, 2 062 mm in the irrigated plot with 90% maximum evapotranspiration and 1 454 mm in no irrigated plot. Water consumption in the lysimeter during different times of day was studied. The production of sugarcane as well as the polarization per tonne per hectare was higher in the lysimeter, compared with irrigated and no irrigated plots.
